Really the only halfway affordable old town hotel in summer, when it drops its rates by a category even then, it's no gift. Э Grand Hotel, Sodra Blasieholmshamnen 8 (э0822 10 20). Stockholm's most elegant hotel a late nineteenthcentury harbourside building overlooking Gamla Stan provides the last word in luxury at worldclass prices. You may get cheaper rates with a Stockholm Package, and in summer, but don't count on it. @ Gustav af Ют1, Stadsgardskajen 153, Sodermalm (®08640 40 77). One of several floating hotels, this homely boat moored off Sodermalm is where those who can't get onto the af Chapman (see "Hostels") end up; you can walk from Gamla Stan in a few minutes. There are singles, doubles and fourbed rooms available. ® Hotell Gustav Vasa, Viistmannagatan 61 («0834 38 01); Tbana Odenplan. Not a bad location, in the northern part of Norrmalm, and certainly good value. Summer prices come down to around 60kr a room. ® Gustavsvikshemmet, Vastmannagatan 15 (®0821 44 50); Tbana Odenplan. Same street and similar prices to the Gustav Vasa, but smaller (nine rooms) and breakfast not included. ® Hotel Karelia, Birger Jarlsgatan 35, Norrmalm («0824 76 60). Finnishowned, this well equipped central hotel does much to attract summer custom, offering good value basement "cabins" and severely reduced rates for its regular rooms in July, making it well worth checking out despite its offputting standard charges. ® HotfiU Langholmen, Kronohaktet, Langholmen («08668 05 00). A beautiful conversion, this was once a prison, the rooms fashioned Irom the former cells. Weekend and summer prices can make this a real bargain. See also "Hostels", below. It's small, so ring first ® Ostermalms Pensionat, Sibyllegatan 19, Ostermalm («08660 30 89); Tbana Ostermalmstorg. Fairly central and handy for Djurgarden. ® Hotel Tegnerlunden, Teerlunden 8, Norrmalm («0834 97 80). Good summer and weekend discounts drop the price by a couple of categories. It's handily placed, too, close to the Strindberg Museum. ® Private rooms For a private room, contact Caretaker, Vasagatan 1517 (a0820 25 45), just a few moments' walk from Central Station. Tell them how much you want to рау and where in the city you want to stay, and you should land somewhere witn fridge and cooking facilities for around 300400kr. There are no less than four official STFIYHF hostels in the city, two of which af Chapman and Langholmen number amongst the best youth hostels in Scandinavia, if not Europe. You'll have to plan ahead if vou want to stay at most of the places listed below: a phone call on arrival is the least that you should do; for some you'll need to have booked weeks in advance.
