The only thing you won't see much of in Gothenburg, at least at the lower end of the market, is Swedish food: the trend instead, as befits the city's trade port status, is towards a growing number of pricey ethnic restaurants, Portuguese to Japanese, alongside the usual staples of pizza, pasta and burgers. Markets and snacks The Stora Saluhallen, the indoor market in Kungstorget (MonFri Э.ЗОатбрщ Sat 9.30am2pm) is tempting beyond words freshly baked bread, fruit, fish and endless cheeses; and it houses two cheap coffee bars. There's also an openair fruit and veg market just outside, while the Domus store on Avenyn (MonSat 10am9pm, Sun l9pm) contains a supermarket A nice place for coffee and cake is Drottning Kristinas Jaktslott, Otterhallegatan 16 (daily llam4pm), just off Kungsgatan in the area bounded by the central canal. It's supposedly a restored hunting lodge, used by Queen Kristina, and though it's no such thing, it's a fine place. Cafes and restaurants Gothenburg is packed with places serving set price limches, nearly all good value. The ones to avoid are those right on Avenyn 1020kr pricier than elsewhere though even at this end of town there are good choices if you know where to look. Better is the area to the west, along Haga Nygatan and the streets on either side trams #1, #3 and #4 pass nearby or it's a short walk from Avenyn. Most of the places listed below are open at night, too. Caft Alle, Sodra Allegatan 13. A soup buffet lunch (with bread, cheese and coffee) for 40kr or so (MonFri llarn3pm) and reasonably priced food up until 7pm. Casa Portuguesa, Avenyn 1012. A Portuguese restaurant with terrific food, especially the fish dishes. It's not cheap, but is one of Gothenburg's better dining experiences. GG12, Avenyn 12. "GG" is the tag for Gothenburg's fishing fleet; this is one of the most expensive and one of the best fish restaurants in town. Grenoli, Avenyn 2. Around 5060kr gets a good lunch in this Italian restaurant on Avenyn, with covered seating on the pavement, although the pizzas are more expensive (6070kr) if you come at night. Gyllene Prag, Sveagatan 25. Reasonably priced Czech restaurant that's popular with the local students. Hemma Hos, Haga Nygatan 12. One of the best on this street 55kr lunches served afflid antiquated furniture.
