AROUND GOTHENBURG Although most people head out of Gothenburg fairly swiftly, usually south towards the port towns and Denmark or east to Stockholm, it's worth sticking around for a couple of days to see something of the distinctive surrounding countryside. Bohuslan county, the coastal strip north of Gothenburg, which runs to the Norwegian border, draws countless tourists onto its rocky islands and hairline gords. It can get crowded here in July, but the traditional wooden cottages, dinky fishing villages and occasional batch of prehistoric rock carvings make the county worth at least a quick look. Northeast of the city, the county of Vastergdtland encompasses the southern sections of Sweden's two largest lakes, Vanem and Vattem. Several attractive towns and villages hereabouts reward a few days' exploration, while longer visits can be devoted to following at least part of the route of the lengthy Gota Canal, which connects the lakes to each other (and, in its entirety, the North Sea to the Baltic): threeandahalfday cruises make the entire journey from Gothenburg to Stockholm, if you're interested.
